Utilizing Instagram Professionally
Utilizing Instagram professionally as an artist. I am taking steps towards trying to build and grow my instagram for a more professional use.
Instagram is the only social media platform that I frequently post to in relation to my art practice (https://www.instagram.com/kayleighbakerart/ ). Instagram can be a highly useful tool for creators and artists to promote their work and themselves. However I feel as though I am not using the site in in a way where I will get the most benefit from it. So I plan to change this.
These are images of my instagram page as it currenlty stands.
The first step I have taken is turning my Instagram account to a creators account. Making this switch from a standard account to a creators account will allow me to see further insights on how my posts and account as a whole preforms in terms of engagement and reach. From this is should be able to deduce what types of posts work better and which ones not so well. Instagram offer three types of accounts to their uses; personal, business and creator. The Business and creator account types are geared towards those wanting to utilize the platform to grown their brand, business or online presence.
Rival IQ list the various features of both the business and creator accounts that Instagram have available to its users in their blog post titled Instagram Creator vs. Business Account — What’s the Difference?. They state:
‘The Creator account is tailored for individuals who are influencers, artists, or content creators. It caters specifically to those who use Instagram as a platform to showcase their creativity, build a personal brand, and connect with a community of followers.’
They also list the many benefits and features the Instagram creator accounts have such as:
Post scheduling
Increased analytics
Monetization tools through subscriptions (exclusively creator accounts)
Access to (trending) audios (exclusively creator accounts)
Ad placement permissions (exclusively creator accounts)
For me the post scheduling feature is of significant interest and is one of the reasons I decided to switch account types. This could be beneficial to maintain a consistency with posting. This is a feature that I plan to experiment with as I struggle to post on a regular and consistent basis, I will update on my experience with this as the weeks go on and see what impacts this has on the traffic directed to my Instagram account and also if this impacts the traffic to my website.
These screen shots show the current insights into my account as of 2nd April 2025. I have not been posting regularly on Instagram for a long time and the engagement levels, I think, reflect that. At an overview most of the views and all of the interactions with my story post are from those already following my account. I essentially want this blog post to be the starting point and reference to see how I can progress using the research I will undertake to better understand Instagram and social media as a whole.
In my next post I will be looking more closely at the way that the algorithm of Instagram works.
